چکیده

The maximum expiratory ̄ow±volume (MEFV) curve is a sensitive test of respiratory mechanics. Several mathematical models for forced expiration have been developed, but they su€er from various shortcomings. It is impossible to calculate the parts of the MEFV curve beyond the ̄ow limiting conditions and computational algorithms do not allow a direct calculation of maximal ̄ow. In the present work a complex, nonlinear forward model, including exciting signal and static recoil pressure± lung volume descriptions and 132 parameters, has been constructed. Direct determination of maximum ̄ow is achieved by means of successive approximation algorithm. The model enables prediction of ̄ow during forced expiration in the whole range of forced vital capacity. # 1998 Elsevier Science Ltd. All rights reserved.

Combining neural network predictions for medical diagnosis

We present our results from combining the predictions of an ensemble of neural networks for the diagnosis of hepatobiliary disorders. To improve the accuracy of the diagnosis, we train the second level networks using the outputs of the first level networks as input data. The second level networks achieve an accuracy that is higher than that of the individual networks in the first level. Compare...

Using densities of estimators to compare pharmacokinetic experiments

Different designs of experiments are compared according to the shape, concentration, etc. of the densities of the least-squares estimator (conditional densities, marginal densities). In contrast with D'Argenio (J. Pharmacokinetics Biopharmaceutics 9(16) (1981) 739-756), where marginal densities have been obtained by simulations, we present here a faster procedure based on well-elaborated approx...

The computational method of constrained constructive optimization (CCO) has been generalized in two important respects: (1) arterial model trees are now grown within a convex, three-dimensional piece of tissue and (2) terminal ̄ow variability has been incorporated into the model to account for the heterogeneity of blood ̄ow observed in real vascular beds. Although no direct information from top...

A self-organizing classi®cation system for the arterial pressure pulse based on the ART2 (adaptive resonance theory) network was developed. The system consists of a preprocessor and an ART2 recognition network. The preprocessor removes the arterial pressure pulse servo component signals from Finapres, detects the systolic pressure points and divides the acquired signals into minimal cardiac cyc...

The use of the Hilbert transform in ECG signal analysis

This paper presents a new robust algorithm for QRS detection using the first differential of the ECG signal and its Hilbert transformed data to locate the R wave peaks in the ECG waveform. Using this method, the differentiation of R waves from large, peaked T and P waves is achieved with a high degree of accuracy. In addition, problems with baseline drift, motion artifacts and muscular noise ar...
